Scaling a design scales its thinnest part too. Here is this one at seven sizes, from 1 to 12 inches on its longer side, with how many copies fit a 12 × 12 inch sheet or mat.
| Size, width × height | Narrowest part | Cut length | Fit on a 12 in sheet | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.71 × 1 in (18 × 25 mm) | 0.38 mm | 231 mm | 130 | Too fine for most machines |
| 1.41 × 2 in (36 × 51 mm) | 0.76 mm | 461 mm | 35 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 2.11 × 3 in (54 × 76 mm) | 1.1 mm | 692 mm | 15 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 2.82 × 4 in (72 × 102 mm) | 1.5 mm | 923 mm | 8 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 4.23 × 6 in (107 × 152 mm) | 2.3 mm | 1,384 mm | 2 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 5.64 × 8 in (143 × 203 mm) | 3 mm | 1,845 mm | 2 | Any material, including 3 mm wood and acrylic |
| 8.46 × 12 in (215 × 305 mm) | 4.6 mm | 2,768 mm | 1 | Any material, including 3 mm wood and acrylic |
The narrowest part is the thinnest neck that holds the design together; sharp tips are not counted. For wood and acrylic, keep it at least as wide as the sheet is thick. How to open the file in Cricut, Silhouette and laser software.
