Scaling a design scales its thinnest part too. Here is this one at seven sizes, from 1 to 12 inches on its longer side, with how many copies fit a 12 × 12 inch sheet or mat.
| Size, width × height | Narrowest part | Cut length | Fit on a 12 in sheet | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 × 0.96 in (25 × 24 mm) | 0.23 mm | 393 mm | 100 | Too fine for most machines |
| 2 × 1.91 in (51 × 49 mm) | 0.46 mm | 786 mm | 25 | Too fine for most machines |
| 3 × 2.87 in (76 × 73 mm) | 0.69 mm | 1,179 mm | 9 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 4 × 3.82 in (102 × 97 mm) | 0.91 mm | 1,572 mm | 6 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 6 × 5.73 in (152 × 146 mm) | 1.4 mm | 2,358 mm | 2 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 8 × 7.64 in (203 × 194 mm) | 1.8 mm | 3,144 mm | 1 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 12 × 11.46 in (305 × 291 mm) | 2.7 mm | 4,715 mm | 1 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
The narrowest part is the thinnest neck that holds the design together; sharp tips are not counted. For wood and acrylic, keep it at least as wide as the sheet is thick. How to open the file in Cricut, Silhouette and laser software.
