Scaling a design scales its thinnest part too. Here is this one at seven sizes, from 1 to 12 inches on its longer side, with how many copies fit a 12 × 12 inch sheet or mat.
| Size, width × height | Narrowest part | Cut length | Fit on a 12 in sheet | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 × 0.99 in (25 × 25 mm) | 0.23 mm | 418 mm | 100 | Too fine for most machines |
| 2 × 1.99 in (51 × 50 mm) | 0.46 mm | 837 mm | 25 | Too fine for most machines |
| 3 × 2.98 in (76 × 76 mm) | 0.69 mm | 1,255 mm | 9 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 4 × 3.97 in (102 × 101 mm) | 0.91 mm | 1,673 mm | 4 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 6 × 5.96 in (152 × 151 mm) | 1.4 mm | 2,510 mm | 1 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 8 × 7.94 in (203 × 202 mm) | 1.8 mm | 3,347 mm | 1 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 12 × 11.92 in (305 × 303 mm) | 2.7 mm | 5,020 mm | 1 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
The narrowest part is the thinnest neck that holds the design together; sharp tips are not counted. For wood and acrylic, keep it at least as wide as the sheet is thick. How to open the file in Cricut, Silhouette and laser software.
