Scaling a design scales its thinnest part too. Here is this one at seven sizes, from 1 to 12 inches on its longer side, with how many copies fit a 12 × 12 inch sheet or mat.
| Size, width × height | Narrowest part | Cut length | Fit on a 12 in sheet | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 × 0.87 in (25 × 22 mm) | 0.2 mm | 338 mm | 110 | Too fine for most machines |
| 2 × 1.74 in (51 × 44 mm) | 0.41 mm | 676 mm | 30 | Too fine for most machines |
| 3 × 2.62 in (76 × 66 mm) | 0.61 mm | 1,013 mm | 12 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 4 × 3.49 in (102 × 89 mm) | 0.81 mm | 1,351 mm | 6 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 6 × 5.23 in (152 × 133 mm) | 1.2 mm | 2,027 mm | 2 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 8 × 6.98 in (203 × 177 mm) | 1.6 mm | 2,703 mm | 1 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 12 × 10.46 in (305 × 266 mm) | 2.4 mm | 4,054 mm | 1 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
The narrowest part is the thinnest neck that holds the design together; sharp tips are not counted. For wood and acrylic, keep it at least as wide as the sheet is thick. How to open the file in Cricut, Silhouette and laser software.
