Scaling a design scales its thinnest part too. Here is this one at seven sizes, from 1 to 12 inches on its longer side, with how many copies fit a 12 × 12 inch sheet or mat.
| Size, width × height | Narrowest part | Cut length | Fit on a 12 in sheet | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 × 0.47 in (25 × 12 mm) | 0.38 mm | 355 mm | 180 | Too fine for most machines |
| 2 × 0.95 in (51 × 24 mm) | 0.76 mm | 710 mm | 50 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 3 × 1.42 in (76 × 36 mm) | 1.1 mm | 1,065 mm | 21 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 4 × 1.89 in (102 × 48 mm) | 1.5 mm | 1,420 mm | 10 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 6 × 2.84 in (152 × 72 mm) | 2.3 mm | 2,131 mm | 4 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 8 × 3.78 in (203 × 96 mm) | 3 mm | 2,841 mm | 3 | Any material, including 3 mm wood and acrylic |
| 12 × 5.68 in (305 × 144 mm) | 4.6 mm | 4,261 mm | 2 | Any material, including 3 mm wood and acrylic |
The narrowest part is the thinnest neck that holds the design together; sharp tips are not counted. For wood and acrylic, keep it at least as wide as the sheet is thick. How to open the file in Cricut, Silhouette and laser software.
