Scaling a design scales its thinnest part too. Here is this one at seven sizes, from 1 to 12 inches on its longer side, with how many copies fit a 12 × 12 inch sheet or mat.
| Size, width × height | Narrowest part | Cut length | Fit on a 12 in sheet | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 × 0.63 in (25 × 16 mm) | 0.23 mm | 405 mm | 140 | Too fine for most machines |
| 2 × 1.26 in (51 × 32 mm) | 0.46 mm | 811 mm | 40 | Too fine for most machines |
| 3 × 1.88 in (76 × 48 mm) | 0.69 mm | 1,216 mm | 15 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 4 × 2.51 in (102 × 64 mm) | 0.91 mm | 1,622 mm | 8 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 6 × 3.77 in (152 × 96 mm) | 1.4 mm | 2,432 mm | 3 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 8 × 5.02 in (203 × 128 mm) | 1.8 mm | 3,243 mm | 2 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 12 × 7.54 in (305 × 191 mm) | 2.7 mm | 4,865 mm | 1 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
The narrowest part is the thinnest neck that holds the design together; sharp tips are not counted. For wood and acrylic, keep it at least as wide as the sheet is thick. How to open the file in Cricut, Silhouette and laser software.
